the girl with a hat

If I was studying psychology I would already know what I would write about in my dissertation. There's definitely something about hats..
Yesterday was a good day. I got at least three flies with one hit: got a chance to work for a good cause, listen to some really good music and got some schoolwork done. all that in one night. Oxjam Aberdeen Takeover took place yesterday in 4 different venues. I was campaigning at the Drummonds. I gave people awesome "FAIR DEAL" knuckle tattoos and got them to sign the petition. It was a slow start, but as it got closer to midnight it picked up and on the whole I'd say it was a success. I'd never done this kind of campaigning before so it was a good experience. Bonus of this was that I got see some pretty interesting acts. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of a guy who only had his guitar to accompany him on stage. He was fun and upbeat. But the band that really blew me away was Kashmir Red(http://www.myspace.com/kashmirred). As far as I'm concerned they have the whole package. You won't get the picture of what they're like from their myspace. Their live is so much better. To become successful they need good people to take care of them. That's probably the biggest problem that bands have. You might have everything, but if people don't see or listen to you then you won't get far. Though, In UK the atmosphere seems to be more welcoming for the new bands to start off, because at least music has a proper business here. While in Estonia there aren't that many places for new bands to show what they've got. However recent years have shown the birth to some really cool events: Tallinn Music Week is the most successful one in my opinion. But that's only because the people behind it truly care about what they do.
Another band I liked was Weather Barn(http://www.myspace.com/weatherbarn). Really different from Kashmir Red who reminded me a bit of Kasabian. WB has more surfing flavour and naive sound, but in a good way.
Another highlights of the week: waking up on Wednesday morning and seeing the snow falling down from sky..it was beautiful..equally beautiful was last night as the sky was so clear you could see so many stars shining upon you..yes, the so called little things do count ;)

I honestly didn't think she is such a good singer. Also check out Biffy Clyro's version of "Love Sex Magic"..it's so gooood! ;)

NB! You don't need to look for fun when you are fun

Cheerio, dear chicas and chicos!

the hardest part...

..of recent skype-marathon was hearing my dearest 4-year-old niece say 'Come back!'..seriously, that's tough..and then I realised that by the time I graduate she's already a schoolgirl!..heavy stuff
so yes, skype. thank god for skype! or actually, thanks to those ESTONIANS who invented skype ;) it's a brilliant way to stay in touch with your loved ones who live far away. So I can still keep my eye on Sandra-Man and Liverpool's-Liina and their adventures ;)(I miss you, guys!)

here's a jolly tune for you to enjoy:

I'm off to bed now, because though school's over for this week I still have two long days at work after what I'm going to sleep at least till midday on Sunday.

Be cool!

Suicidal Smoothies "Drink To Death"

..this is imaginary all-girl punk band that me and my workmates came up with. don't you just love stream of consciousness!
Talking about stream of consciousness, I had a lecture where we had to come up with ideas/solutions for different problems/events. I'd say my group was the most creative one, because for finding a concept for black tie christmas party we started off with a dialect book and finished with James Bond and casino. Nae bad!
So, so far, uni is goooood! Though, I can already see some assignment deadlines on the horizon. That's all right. I have probably never said it before, but this time I really like to study. Geez! I see myself diving into books and turning into a nerd..in a good way. there can't be any real nerds on this course because we also have a chance to put the theory into practice (that's also one of the main reasons why I chose RGU). I honestly feel that this time I'm more prepared and ready for uni. Well for sure I'm a bit older and smarter than I was after finishing high school, but obviously there's still loads to learn. So the next 4 years should be exciting ;)
We haven't yet had a night out with our course, but hopefully there's something coming anytime soon.
"The Hurts" virus is spreading around.. I really like how everybody keeps falling in love with them. but they're totally worth it!

It's John Lennon's 70th Birthday today. Happy Birthday, dear John!

Stay warm and positive!

Strike a pose!

Here I am again. I'm rubbish. I know. Sorry. It's not easy to write this blog, when there's loads of things going on.
Sooo....I've met my coursemates, who at first glance look completely normal and interesting people..yes really! we've had a couple of ice-breaking sessions, but there's still a long way to go until we all recognise and know each other. I can tell you that I'm not the only "foreigner" on the course: there are people from Germany, France, Luxemburg, Poland. Oh, and did I mentioned that there's only one guy on the course and the rest are girls..yup. true. when we had our group photo taken outside Aberdeen Business School I felt kind of sorry for that guy: girls (including me of course) were all giggling and chatting like baby birds who are waiting to be fed. He must have thought how the hell did he got into this. So I guess we (girls) have to be careful that we don't scare him away.
First week of lectures is over. So far so good...actually really good. I'm getting quite excited about this course ;) Lecturers know what they're talking about and I like that the atmosphere is not overly strict and formal. Lecturers are not trying to build a wall between them and the students. quite the opposite. This week I'm having tutorials too. so we'll see how they go.
Work's been good.
My pink umbrella died a few days ago. It got serious fractures when I was trying to get home during one lunchtime, because the weather was just horrible. all my clothes were completely soaked. No wonder a few people looked at me weirdly: I looked like I had taken a shower without removing my clothes....and the next day was so nice: sunshine and blue skies. lately this seems to be the pattern: sunny day-rainy day-sunny day etc
Today I bought myself a pair of heels. Those who know me are probably making suprised faces. :) yup. obviously they're not like killer stilettos but still cute, add a few inches and what is more, it was a bargain: I got them for £6.40 (original price was £18). good deal, I'd say ;)
What else have I done recently? Going to nights out with my flatmates, workmates and other mates. :)
To be honest, I kind of ignored the freshers week. Firstly, because I was working. Secondly, this is my second time being to uni and I can say I've already been there, done that. Nevertheless, freshers week made me quite nostalgic and brought back some good memories.

I can totally sing like Bonnie Tyler, because dancing/singing cheesy tunes last night cost me my voice. hey-hou! I'm not complaining, I would like have a voice of a middle aged woman who smokes loads of cigarettes per day. As I'm not into smoking I enjoy the moments I have when my voice's on holiday :)

Madonna's 'Vogue' doesn't always ring a bell.. how's that even possible?!

See you later senjoores & senjoritas!

I AM SORRY!!
really, truly, madly, deeply..
but I do have a good reason for being away for such a long time: work. yes indeed. Tick. I'm working in a cafe-bar at the theatre. pretty cool, I'd say ;) and last week I worked over 35 hours, so I was pretty tired when I got home and couldn't get into blog writing mood. but here I am now. I'm trying to be more consistent with this blog.
So what has happened since my last blog update? I have a job now as you already know. I was on my way to Nero's to hand in my last CV. but hey-hou! walked past the theatre and saw a "Staff wanted" sign. it wasn't going to hurt to just go in and ask more about this vacancy. had a nice chat with the manager. trial day the next day. and here I am: this week I worked full-time. good stuff. People seem nice and friendly.
A few days ago I went to see my university campus in Garthdee. It's about 30 minutes ride by bus. but it's well worth it! I absolutely fell in love: the views to the city and the nature around the campus... sooo beautiful!! I can easily imagine myself having a rest on the grass with a view to the river Dee. mmm! :)
Weather's been way too windy for me. not used to it..(yet). so on my day off I spent most of the time drinking ginger-lemon tee.
Now is time to recommend some movies to you all.
'Unthinkable' - the name says it all. good acting (Samuel L. Jackson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Michael Sheen).
'Going The Distance' - romantic comedy is a genre that offers you a simple entertainment and usually nothing more. well, this movie offered some really good music. and I liked the story, too. Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, good job! :)

Next week, on Tuesday I am going to meet my coursemates and learn more about the course (timetable, exams etc).

Take care!!

:)

It's like S..O..L..O

Jeah! Hello cyberworld!! It's been a while..
We now have internet in the house..permanently. Looking forward to Skype-date with my friends and family :)
I've got news for you: I've found a place to live. and guess what I don't even have to move my stuff. the thing is I'm still going to stay at Marta's place. Nice.
So..Home..tick!
two more "ticks" to go: Work and School.
Today I applied to Primark. They sure take things seriously. I can't recall the last time I had to solve proper mathematical problems...probably in high school. all these logical and arithmetical problems were actually kind of cool. I enjoyed it. Will they give me job for that? We'll see.
It's really windy over here. like really! Though wind has some good points.. I mean, why do you pay for botox if you can just walk against wind and get rid of those wrinkles. good idea, ay ;)

Sweet dreams :)

Yes Woman?!

So...Tuesday was a one of those days..
Firstly, I used McGyver skills to fix my umbrella. and I think I fixed it..with a hammer..oh yes. Going to test it out as soon as there's some rain (too see if that trouble was all worth it, the umbrella cost £1...).
Secondly, a warning for you guys out there doing your laundry: don't leave your stuff to soak too long. I accidentally bleached my jacket. hey-hou!Thirdly, I met this guy, who made Tombraider the computer game. According to him, his name is even in the closing credits. and he hates Steven Seagal (mm..who doesn't?). Anyway, that's what you get, when you go to the beach sooth your mind: instead you get an interesting conversation.
Yesterday made me feel like the main character of "Yes Man". Should I call myself a Yes Woman from now on?..

first photo evidence of me in Aberdeen ;)

haudi-hou!

a quick update.
but first, I lied to you. There are actually more churches in Aberdeen than just two (well of course. d'oh!), but two of them work as nightclubs. and I've been to one of them (if I remember correctly..)Yes..Marta has showed me the nightlife in Aberdeen. So far so good! :) People are cool, music is cool (not all the time, but still...Marta knows some great trance moves that can keep you dancing no mather how bad the music is). To be honest, I can't remember when was the last time I've danced so much. Legs were hurting the next day. Don't get me wrong, I don't dance like Shakira (for Christ sake I played basketball for 9 years..not very lady-like is it). Though, I did get a compliment about my dancing..Nevertheless, everybody can dance, because there's always silly dance. There's a video on youtube with Talking Heads doing some brilliant dance moves ;DNo news concerning job or a new living place. But I'm not worried. Remembering what happened in Bath, it takes about two weeks or so, before your phone starts ringing. Besides I do have plan B and plan C. Plan B: they're always looking for new staff at Burger King. Plan C: I might as well start my own business by repairing cameras (fortunately I can't guarantee that the outcome is always positive).Actually, I'm really looking forward to the time when I have all these things sorted out: school, job, home. So that I can start feeling not so touristy.Internet is gone from the flat. Probably because neighbours got a feeling that somethings going on. Luckily, there will be Internet in about two weeks time. At the moment I'm in this lovely little French cafe. Drinking some peppermint tea and writing this. (P.S. They make lovely tomato & basil soup here!)I've been reading this book "Yes Man" by Danny Wallace. It's really entertaining to read how this depressed guy suddenly starts saying "Yes" to everything. and I mean everything. He gets into really bizarre situations. That book made me think about how many times have I said yes to things I'd normally say no. I came up with some, some of those spontanous things you sometimes do because you think "What's the worst thing that could happen? I'll give it a go!" Those are actually one of the most refreshing and exciting memories I have. So I really suggest reading that book. whenever you're feeling down just read a chapter and you'll be laughing again. ;)
Weather's been quite nice. We've had some rain, but mostly it's been sunny and windy.
here's also a photo of my luggage (I forgot to post it earlier)
Cheers, my dears!!

This is just the beginning..

Hey-hou, my dear blog readers. This is my new blog. A blog about UK, Scotland, Aberdeen, my life, my stream of consciousness etc.

Why am I writing in English? (I appologise for any grammatical errors I make. I'm not native, you know)
Because:
A) I want to practise English (at the moment I'm living with Estonians so there's no English at home)
B) to urge my mum to learn English (though she's probably going to use my sisters or google translate to understand what I'm writing) No worries, there should come some writings in Estonian ;)
C) I do have some friends who don't understand Estonian and English is widely spoken language.

So here I am: sitting next to this malfunctioning banjo that Marta gave to me (ei Liina, see ei ole mu "Väike My", mitte veel vähemasti ;)), trying to gather my thoughts and write.
For those of you still in the dark: I moved to UK to study Events Management. The course lasts for 4 years. Long enough to get to know this country a bit more than just a tourist.
Now about my trip from Tartu to Aberdeen (via Riga and Glasgow). It lasted about 18 hours. During those many hours I experienced many different emotions: from teary-eyed sadness to pure joyfulness. That sadness came from realising that I'm moving far away from the people that are really close to my heart. Therefore, sitting near security control where friends and family members sent away their travellers, wasn't making things easier for me as I was in Riga all by myself (well I did have Devendra Banhart with me, but he was in mp3 format..not helping that much). Luckily I met a girl, Alena, who was going to Glasgow and wanted to study the same thing. That meeting in a bag drop queue made this trip much funnier.
Flight with Ryanair was what-more-could-you-excpect-from-a-cheap-airline-type of flight. Luckily the pilots were on top of their game. They even got a nice applaud at the end of the flight (I'm not sure why. We did flew through a cloud and the plane was pretty shaky then... Nevertheless, thank you, guys!)
So finally in Glasgow. Mmmm! The air was already different. It felt great! First contact with the real Scottish accent was on a train from the airport to the city centre: ticket controller William. So this is the language I have to get used to. Nae bad ;)
What is more, I know have a place to stay overnight in Glasgow and that is a great thing because my first impression about Glasgow is...Wow! Love at first sight! ;)
The following bus trip to Aberdeen was another wow. As a girl coming from a country where the highest peak is 318 meters, now seeing mountains..wow..and I mean mountains (they looked great from the plane, but driving past them was another thing and certainly climbing on them is the best). A hiking/climbing trip to the mountains was instantly booked in my head. All these mountains and the sea (no wonder Biffy Clyro is from Scotland!) and those castles etc. Yes, there's so much to see, feel, hear :)
My first day in Aberdeen: rain! Better get used to that, ay. So summer is over for me, as today the temperature was 12 degrees at one point. First thing I bought was an umbrella..a pink one to brighten up these rainy days. ;) The city itself looks nice. I saw a some statues (including William Wallace), many beautiful buildings, shopping centres. As Marta told me there are two curches in this city and both of them work now as nightclubs. And of course the beach. Though the water is way to cold to have a swim it's still really nice and relaxing place.
Ok That's it. Actually this is just the beginning. Beginning of many-many new and exciting stuff ;)..

So come back every now and then if you want and check out what have I got to say about....everything & nothing ;)

P.S. Dear Santa Claus. If you're reading this letter can you get me a ticket to Biffy Clyro's show in Aberdeen. Though it seems to be sold out I'm sure you can work something out. Thank you!

P.P.S. Aberdeen have been mentioned by the one and only Homer Simpson (check out the episode "Monty Can't Buy Me Love" and 18 minute).

Stay cool,

K.S.
